The motor carrier rating is based on performance data that are publicly available. Most of the information (census data) was originally entered into various government maintained public databases when the carrier applied for its authority to operate, and has not been updated since. This includes the carrier's number of miles driven, number of power units, etc. IMCAC has found that in most cases, these data have dramatically changed since the carrier first began to operate. Therefore, the public databases are often outdated, or otherwise incorrect. Carriers may submit new information to IMCAC, and once verified, can receive a new IMCAC rating based on the most recent data. This data verification process can be done without undergoing an audit (though it is required for the AUDITED designation). Data verification is performed by IMCAC personnel using the IMCAC Motor Carrier Data Verification Application (download below). The application process requires that the carrier supply supporting documentation. The application can be submitted by either the motor carrier or by an IMCAC-Registered Auditor on behalf of the motor carrier. In either case, a one-time $300 application fee is required. Once the data have been verified, IMCAC will enter it into its own data base, and recalculate the carrier rating. IMCAC will continue to update the carrier's data, and its rating, every six months (for three years) at no additional charge. ATTENTION CARRIERS: IMCAC does not include "Not at Fault" accidents in its accident rate calculation, as long as proper documentation is provided. Also, experience has shown that most of the applications received by IMCAC have at least one discrepancy between public source data and that provided by the carrier and verified by IMCAC. Therefore, data verification is important in ensuring that the carrier's safety performance rating is based on accurate information.
